I changed the engine oil in my WRX-STI that had been sleeping for 15 years.

The engine is hard to start, so I decided to try changing the engine oil. It would be a waste to put in new oil when I don’t know if the engine will start. I put in some oil that I had in the warehouse.

The total came to approximately ¥83,000.

３　Work Done

Since the car was already jacked up, no prep work was required.

This is what the engine oil looks like in a WRX-STI that’s been sitting unused for 14 years.

Now it’s time to drain the oil.

Remove the 17mm drain bolt.

Once loose, I loosen it further by hand, but it spurts out, so I’m nervous. And again, I failed. I got the floor dirty.

I should have laid newspaper down.

Once it’s out, I replace the drain gasket and retighten the drain.

Add engine oil. It was old, but clean, so I used it. I actually wanted to replace the filter element as well, but unfortunately my wrench size didn’t fit.

The correct way to check the oil level is to let the engine run for about 10 minutes. In this case, the engine wouldn’t start, so there’s nothing we can do.

Finally, will the engine start?!

It’s impossible, and the battery seems suspicious. It’s true that I’ve been using it for a while, and the alternator isn’t turning, so it can’t be charged.

Next time, I’ll try changing the coolant, even though the engine won’t start!

15年間眠ったWRX-STIのエンジンオイルをDIYで交換した

なかなかエンジンが掛かりませんが、エンジンオイルを交換してみることにします。エンジンが掛かるか分からないのに新しいオイルを入れるのはもったないです。倉庫にあったオイルを入れてみました。

3　今回の作業

すでにジャッキアップされているので、準備作業が入りません。

使用後14年も放置されたWRX-STIのエンジンオイルはこんな感じです。

さていよいよオイルを抜きにかかります。

１７ミリのドレンボルトを外します。

緩んだら手でさらに緩めて行きますがドバッと出るので緊張。でやっぱり失敗。床を汚してしまいました。

新聞紙を敷くべきだったな

抜けたらドレンパッキンを交換してドレンを締め直します。

エンジンオイルを入れます。古くても綺麗だったので使用します。ほんとはエレメントも交換する予定だったけど、レンチの大きさが合わずに残念

10分くらいエンジンをかけてからオイルの量の確認をするのが正しいやり方です。今回は、エンジンがかからないので仕方ないです。

いよいよ、エンジン始動なるか！

無理、しかもバッテリーが怪しい。確かにずっと使いパナしでオルタも回らないから充電できていない。
